It is Future-Oriented
Coaching is a practice that focuses on crafting a better future by making changes to the now. Unlike therapy, coaching does not concern itself with the client’s past or understanding how the past shapes the present. On the contrary, it paves the way for a better future by working around present challenges. So, instead of fixating on the problem, coaching helps clients come up with strategies and solutions to address those problems. This brings us to the art of goal-setting.
It is Goal-Oriented
Coaches help clients to identify their present challenges. Once they’re aware of what is holding them back, clients can work together with coaches to come up with actionable goals and how to achieve them. This fosters a growth mindset, which redirects the client’s focus from the problem to the solution It is collaborative The relationship between a client and coach is that of a team. The client has the flexibility to explore their problems and the direction in which they expect the coaching to progress. The coach listens without judgment and works with the client to ensure that their goals are met. This creates a supportive relationship without unequal power dynamics.
It is Empowering
Coaching is centred on motivating the client to set goals and make important changes. The client is not seen as a victim, but rather as someone who has the potential to improve and simply requires motivation. As part of this approach, many coaches use techniques like Motivational Interviewing (MI). An environment of support and empowerment can also help to boost the client’s self-confidence.
